FAQ

Answering your questions about Functional Medicine Coaching

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine addresses the underlying causes of disease, using a systematic, personalized approach. It is an evolution in the practice of medicine that better addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century. By shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centered approach, Functional Medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms.

What is a health coach?

A health coach helps you identify your needs and create a path to wellness.  This personalized approach empowers you to take charge of your health and create self-directed, lasting changes. The coach listens to you and believes in your ability to change. The coach knows that you are the expert of your own life. The coach is nonjudgmental and supportive and offers information so you can make choices that resonate with your lifestyle.

What does a Functional Medicine Certified health coach do?

  • Functional Medicine Certified Health Coaches use a ground-breaking WHOLE systems approach that integrates the principles of Functional Medicine, functional nutrition, eating psychology, mind-body medicine, and positive psychology.
  • Functional medicine health coaches provide proactive and personalized support to empower clients to take an active role in their own health.
  • Coaches help bridge the gap between doctors office visits and everyday life by addressing how environmental and lifestyle factors influence the emergence and progression of disease.

Is health coaching right for me?

  • Are you currently being treated for a chronic condition?
  • Does a chronic condition run in your family?
  • Do you want to lose weight?
  • Do you want to have more energy, focus and vitality?
  • Do you want to sleep better at night?
  • Have you been struggling to stick to an exercise program?
  • Are there people in your life who cause you stress?
  • Are you feeling overwhelmed or stressed? Would you like to learn coping methods?
  • Do you need someone to listen to you? Are your doctor’s office visits too short to really get to the root of the cause of your problems?
  • Do you want to follow your doctor’s recommendations but don’t know where to start?
  • Are you ready to take control of your  future health by making lasting, realistic changes?
  • Are you planning to have a baby?

What are the sessions like?

  • Sessions last approximately 60 mins and can be conducted either via video conference, in person or on the phone.
  • Clients share what’s on their mind and how they’re feeling.
  • Nancy helps the clients identify barriers to healthy lifestyle changes.
  • Nancy offers information, with the client’s permission, on strategies to improve health.
  • Strategies may include a mind-body technique, a food to try, an article to read, a breathing exercise, etc.
  • A plan is co-created: Clients, with the coach’s help, make a plan that feels comfortable and attainable.

What if I can’t afford a health coach?

Discounts are available for clients who cannot afford the typical rate. Please reach out to Nancy to discuss a price that is in line with your ability to pay.

I’m planning to have a baby, how can I be sure I’m at my optimal health?

Let Nancy’s coaching help you optimize your sleep, diet, movement, stress management, and relationships so you are most likely to have a happy, healthy baby.

How can health coaching help me lose weight?

  • Healthy people tend to have a healthy weight.
  • Many unhealthy conditions and habits can lead to weight gain. Take back your health to take control of your weight.
  • Nancy’s health coaching is not a weight loss program. Weight loss programs do not address your health, only your weight. Often such programs may take weight off quickly, but only temporarily as your health can be impaired in the process. And then your body may be more likely to hold on to weight so it quickly bounces back.

I like my weight but I don’t feel well. Should I try health coaching?

Yes. Overweight can be a sign of ill health but it’s not the only sign. If you have digestive issues, acne or rashes, headaches, fatigue, insomnia, or any condition diagnosed by your doctor, you may be able to improve your health with coaching. Nancy’s health coaching works toward eliminating the cause of your symptoms as well as alleviating them.

I have a great doctor. Do I still need a health coach?

Health coaching bridges the gap between everyday life and office visits.  Nancy can consult with your doctor with your permission to make sure you are right on track

My life is very busy. How will I have time to implement a coach’s suggestions?

Nancy works with your schedule and the demands on your life. Together, you will find ways to improve your lifestyle choices within the confines of your schedule. Nancy has the knowledge and skills to get you where you want to be without neglecting your obligations.

Are you a nutritionist, dietician, nurse, nurse practitioner, or physician's assistant?

No, New Orleans Health Coach is not a nutritionist, dietician, nurse, nurse practitioner, or physician’s assistant.  Health coaching is providing support and information so that clients can make the best choices and decisions in optimizing a healthy lifestyle. Health coaches do not treat disease or psychiatric condition, diagnose or prescribe, or provide therapy.

What training has New Orleans Health Coach Nancy Adams received?

Your health coach graduated from the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy, Inc. She studied the basic principles of Functional Medicine, positive psychology, coaching skills, relaxation and stress reduction techniques, and the Functional Medicine approach to nutrition. Nancy became a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach in the September 2017, the first cohort of board certified coaches.

What topics can be addressed during coaching sessions?

In coaching sessions you will be the one who determines what topics you want to focus on. Examples include adhering to dietary recommendations, weight loss, developing and sticking with an exercise plan, ways to reduce stress, or how to deal with challenging family or work situations.

Is meeting with a coach over the phone or video conference as effective as meeting in person?

Definitely. There is research showing that effective coaching does not need to be face-to-face.

Do I need to pay in advance?

You can pay after you complete your first session so that you have confidence that coaching is right for you. Coaching outcomes are typically better when several sessions are paid for in a package. By doing so, you will be fully committed to reaching your goals. And you will allow yourself the time to form healthy habits.
