To Get Different Results You Have to Do Something Different

Conventional medicine doesn’t have all the answers.

For the first two-thirds of my life I had so much faith in conventional medicine. I used to say I loved high tech medicine because I was so impressed with advances. But eventually I changed my mind.

I found this out the hard way. I had procedures done that left me worse off. For example, I had sinus surgery. Afterward, I had little sinus relief (it didn’t address the underlying allergies) and i ended up with a stomach ulcer from the post surgical painkillers. Nice.

And the older I got, the more annoying symptoms I started amassing. Was there a pill for my every ill? Not really. And I always struggle with my weight. I don’t want to look like a slim swimsuit model (well that wouldn’t happen anyway), I just want to be fit and confident. But eat less and exercise more never worked the way it was supposed to.

So then I discovered functional medicine. Rather than focusing on diagnosing and prescribing, it focuses on the root causes of ill health. And the root causes are in your lifestyle choices. That’s why I became a health coach. I want to help people address the root causes of their problems, like overweight.

Conventional wisdom for weight loss is wrong.

That means eat less and move more is wrong. Think what happens when you diet, that is, eat less. You might lose some pounds. But, you typically lose muscle mass, gain body fat, and become insulin resistant. That just means you now have carb cravings and you easily gain weight back on, even sticking to the same number of calories that helped you lose in the first place. Right, that sucks.

Ok, how about upping your exercise. You can do more hours on the treadmill. Which will be a stress on your body (and dieting stresses your body too). So what happens when you stress your body? You up your cortisol. And cortisol drives weight gain. Does that treadmill feel like a hamster wheel now?

So what’s preventing you from losing weight?

Insulin and cortisol. These are two hormones that are intimately related to your weight. Keep them balanced and your weight can normalize. But that’s easier said than done. So much that goes on in our bodies affects our hormones and our weight. See here. But the good news is you have control. But it’s not eat less, move more.

To get different results you have to do something different.

That something different is to gain health. And health begins with your basic lifestyle decisions: what you eat, how you sleep, your stress management, movement and exercise, and supporting relationships. But are you confused about how to make all these decisions?

This is where I can be of help to you. Research supports making positive lifestyle changes. Over and over, people are coming out of diabetes by making diet and lifestyle modifications. People have success overcoming depression with exercise. Lifestyle improves dementia symptoms. If you want to see research that shows the effectiveness of health coaching, see here.

I read about health successes all the time, and I see them too. I stay informed on all the newest research.  I learned health coaching from Functional Medicine Coaching Academy. I’m in their alumni program so I get webinars from experts all the time. I am one of their 20 graduates who is a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach.

But I used to be a teacher and a professor. So I understand how people think and learn. I never push my ideas on a client. I get clients to look inside their life and habits and find ways they want to improve. I share my knowledge only when asked. And I never prescribe supplements or diets. I let your doctor do that. But I can take you through your diet step by step and help you make it work for you.

Can you imagine what your healthy life will look like?

I can be a part of your path to that life. I’ll help you visualize it. I will listen to you. I’ll be your cheerleader and I’ll keep you on track. I’ll help you remove obstacles and find ways to enjoy the process. We’ll meet weekly or so, as often as you need, in person or video chat. You try out some steps and then we meet again and go over how it all went. Then we refine even more. After ten sessions, habits are pretty well in place and you should see some results.

So contact me. Start living the life you were meant to. Free yourself from your health issues and overweight. Laissez les bonne temps roulez!
